Weed + Fitness? Feels like a sketchy combo, yeah?\u00a0 Like they could never coexist? But for some athletes, cannabis is as common as compression pants.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first time I saw cannabis and fitness come together was a couple of years ago in a dark California gym parking lot. \u00a0My friends and I were about to go show Leg Day what’s up. Before we went in, they wanted to hotbox the car. They invited me to join, but I just stood there dumbstruck. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why would I want to go to the gym high? What about smoke\u2019s effects on my lungs? What about weed making me lazy? What about <\/span>Leg Day<\/span><\/i>?! <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Since that night, I\u2019ve come to appreciate how The Reefer, in all its forms, can be a great workout companion. \u00a0Hot boxing before Leg Day is still not quite my jam\u2026 but a high THC topical massage for sore muscles? CBD edibles to reduce inflammation? \u00a0Linalool before yoga? Yes, please!<\/span><\/p>\n

There is still a lot to learn about cannabis and it’s impact on physical activity. \u00a0We know cannabis contains phytocannabinoids that act on a system called our endocannabinoid system (ECS). \u00a0The ECS plays a role in our ability to regulate <\/span>mood, pain, and inflammation<\/span><\/a>, all of which can influence your ability to take part in, enjoy and recover from a workout.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trick is finding what works for you and timing your dose appropriately. \u00a0Go slow. Try different forms; different varieties. Think about your goals. Start with small doses.\u00a0<\/span>(New to cannabis dosing?\u00a0Start here<\/a>)<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

As with all things having to do with your health, take ownership of the process and listen carefully to your body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While cannabis and fitness might work for some folks, please keep in mind r<\/span>eefer and working out might not be for you. \u00a0Mixing the two can be anywhere from plain ineffective, to slightly uncomfortable, to potentially dangerous.<\/p>\n

Cannabis can lead to\u00a0effects on the heart<\/a>\u00a0and potentially lowered blood pressure (read: dizziness). \u00a0\u00a0Hydration is also very important\u00a0if you decide to experiment. \u00a0Always consult a doctor if you have specific medical concerns.<\/p>\n

PRE \/ POST WORKOUT:<\/b><\/h2>\n

Pain & Inflammation Management:<\/b><\/h3>\n

Everyone knows working out can make you sore. \u00a0\u201cVitamin I\u201d is a term you might hear around the gym because of how often folks will \u201c<\/span>pop ibuprofen like a vitamin<\/span><\/a>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Some folks take ibuprofen before a workout, in order to manage soreness and minor aches. \u00a0A<\/span> recent study<\/span><\/a> found \u201cNSAID use by runners <\/span>during<\/span><\/i> their marathon remains high despite published medical guidance advising against its use\u201d. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be clear, popping \u201cvitamin I\u201d is <\/span>not recommended<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0It does, however, point to a long-standing practice in sports of using substances to reduce the inflammation caused by working out. <\/span><\/p>\n

It turns out, certain compounds in cannabis can be <\/span>just as effective<\/span><\/a> at reducing minor pain and inflammation. \u00a0THC and CBD have both been shown to help with <\/span>inflammation and pain<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span>CBD<\/span><\/a> heavy options can be best when trying to minimize the more intoxicating side of reefer.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Consumption Methods:<\/b><\/h4>\n

Inhaling gives the most immediate effect, but for those monitoring your VO<\/span>2<\/span> Max, combustion can be tough on the lungs. \u00a0Vaping is a solid non-combustion inhalant option if looking for fast relief without the fire. \u00a0There are also many non-smokable products such as tinctures, edibles, and <\/span>topicals<\/span><\/a> if you prefer to experiment without inhaling. Be aware that all of these methods will take longer to take effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next time you\u2019re sore and have an evening free, here are some experiments to try:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A cannabis topical to massage your sore muscles.<\/strong> It\u2019s an excellent way to begin experimenting with cannabis, and might help with post-workout soreness.\u00a0 Physic<\/a> Field Balm is one of my go-tos.<\/p>\n

Comfortable with edibles, but want to avoid intoxication? <\/strong>\u00a0Wyld<\/a> makes a strawberry, all-CBD gummy that could be a good place to start.<\/p>\n

Already consume THC on the regular for workouts?<\/strong> Why not try CBD for recovery? \u00a0Mr. Moxey’s Mints<\/a> has a lovely 1:1 (CBD:THC) Peppermint (bonus points: low in carbs)<\/p>\n

DURING WORKOUT:<\/b><\/h3>\n

Focus on Your Entourage<\/b><\/h4>\n

If you haven\u2019t heard about terpenes yet you\u2019re missing out. \u00a0Check out this primer on them and <\/span>The Entourage Effect<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0In short, these are secondary compounds that give cannabis its aroma. \u00a0They\u2019re thought to contribute to the wide variety of experiences felt when consuming various cannabis chemovars. \u00a0Terpenes might be why different strains have different effects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that sketchy California gym parking lot? \u00a0As soon as those fellas got out of the car, I couldn\u2019t stop grilling them about what Leg Day was like stoned. \u00a0I heard stuff like \u201cIt just helps me get in the zone,\u201d \u201cIt makes me feel like a machine,\u201dand \u201cI feel so focused on my movements.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Turns out, there are a couple of terpenes that might explain that \u201ccrushing it\u201d feeling my friends enjoyed. \u00a0<\/span>Limonene<\/span><\/a> has been linked to both an increase in testosterone and a feeling of euphoria. \u00a0Terpinolene is a terpene some folks love for increasing focus. And <\/span>pinene<\/span><\/a> tends to be fairly clear headed for folks as well as a bronchodilator. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A strain high in Limonene, Terpinolene, and\/or Pinene could potentially lead to a focused, powerful, clear headed high. \u00a0Strains like Voyager #1 and Jack Herer are some of my favorites in this category. <\/span><\/p>\n

Physical activities with a little more of a flow to them: pilates, climbing, running, etc. might benefit from varieties dominant in <\/span>linalool<\/span><\/a> and\/or <\/span>\u03b2-caryophyllene (BCP)<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span>Some folks find ocimene adds a bit of \u201cfloatiness\u201d to a high, making it a potential compliment for more meditative activities like yoga or dance. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Strains with Linalool, BCP, and\/or Ocimene tend to be fairly relaxing for folks in the body and mind, without bringing much too much of the couchlock. \u00a0Zkittles and Raspberry Tart are some strains I enjoy in this category.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a specific feeling, or for something that might enhance a specific activity, let your budtender know. Same goes for specific terpene profiles. The more you know about what you\u2019re looking for, the better your search for the perfect workout entourage will go. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only are substances prohibited at most levels of competition, but there is no concrete evidence cannabis can make you a better athlete. \u00a0There are lots of anecdotes about folks perception of improved performance. But the science is still TBD and the rules of some organizations are very clear around substance use of any kind. \u00a0(Though, the times, <\/span>they are \u2018a changin\u2019<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n
